UBCIM - IFLA Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC Core Activity

IFLA - CDNL Alliance for Bibliographic Standards (ICABS) a new alliance between IFLA and national libraries was established in August 2003 to continue and expand the coordination work formerly done by the IFLA UBCIM and UDT Core Programme Offices.

The IFLA Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC Core Activity (UBCIM) which has been hosted by Die Deutsche Bibliothek since 1990, is closed as per 1stMarch 2003. The Programme Director Marie-France Plassard retired on that same date.
The UBCIM Programme has achieved a great deal over the past thirty years. It has been responsible for the creation of the ISBDs as well as UNIMARC, and for maintaining a full publishing and seminar programme. Many people have contributed to its success during this time, but especially the host libraries, initially the British Library, and in the more recent past Die Deutsche Bibliothek.
IFLA would like to acknowledge the contribution of all who have been concerned in this very valuable contribution to the process of international bibliographic standardization. We would also like to express our thanks to the host institutions, and especially to Die Deutsche Bibliothek for maintaining UBCIM in a period when funding is difficult for all international activities.
National Library of Portugal (NLP) has offered to act as the new host for the continuation and further development of the UNIMARC format. The NLP will also take over the publication of the journal International Cataloguing and Bibliographic Control.

In 2003 the UBCIM core activity was closed and the coordination of bibliographic standardization was moved to the IFLA - CDNL Alliance for Bibliographic Standards (ICABS), which was later changed to the IFLA-CDNL Alliance for Digital Strategies (ICADS). In 2011 it was decided to discontinue ICADS. During the 2011 WLIC conference the idea arose of revitalizing UBC and the Bibliography Section took on this task.
