Bill Gates Foundation to upgrade 2 Patna

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has decided to upgrade two public libraries in Bihar by 2015 under the banner of its Global Libraries (GL) programme. One of them is Gate Public Library in the state capital while the other is to be chosen between Shree Krishna Seva Sadan, Munger, and Bihar Hitaishi Pustkalay, Patna City.

"The main objective of the programme is to ensure the availability of critical information and state-of-the-art knowledge resources for the libraries in Bihar. Another focus area of this project is to forge partnership with relevant and potential partners from government and private sectors to add value to this project," said B Shaddrac, a representative of the foundation, here on Tuesday.

He said the foundation has selected Nasscom Foundation and Digital Empowerment Foundation to coordinate in its endeavour of enhancing the functioning of public libraries in Bihar through digital cataloguing for ready reference and has allotted a gross fund of US$100,000 to these foundations for the implementation of the project. "We have been experimenting with new ideas and hope for positive results," Shaddrac added.

The project, when completed, will prove to be a great help for the academicians of adjacent areas, said Digital Empowerment Foundation representative Saeed Kazi.
